It was lousy weather for arson, as well as for volunteer patrols in Detroit neighborhoods.

Citizen watch group members turned out anyhow on Angels' Night. Firebugs apparently didn't.

The Detroit News has the story from the streets:

Police and fire authorities said the frigid, windy weather seemed to have helped to thwart arsonist activity. That was good news on a day when tradition brings volunteers out to the streets to keep vandals from burning the city's tens of thousands abandoned and vacant properties. . . .

"I am happy with the volunteer participation," Mayor Dave Bing said late Tuesday. "I am hopeful that our three-day results will show that the number of fires continue to trend downward, as they did last year."

The city plans to release fire totals Thursday.
