Detroit's problem with fires attracted the attention of Ed Schultz, of MSNBC's the Ed Show.
He noted Los Angeles, with nearly 4 million people, averages about 11 structure fires a day, but Detroit, with about 700,000 residents, averages 30.
"Detroit is always burning somewhere," Schultz said.
He noted Mayor Dave Bing's announcement that the city would have to lay off 164 fire fighters next month, though many would be able to be rehired if Detroit receives a federal grant for which it has applied.
