Not a great way to end your collegiate career.

Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News reports that Michigan State senior linebacker and two-time captain Max Bullough has been suspended for a "violation of team rules," ruining his opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl against Stanford on Jan. 1.

The team, in issuing a statement, declined to give a reason, which can only lead to a lot of speculation. The team obviously doesn't want this to become a distraction, but the fact it failed to disclose the reason will only prompt reporters to do more digging.

And that's likely to cause a bigger distraction. Not so smart on the part of the MSU folks.

“Max Bullough has been suspended for the remainder of the season for a violation of team rules,” coach Mark Dantonio sayd in a statement. “It is extremely disappointing for all parties involved. We will stay focused and close ranks as we prepare for Stanford on January 1 in the Rose Bowl. Max will forever remain a Spartan and valued member in this team’s achievements.

“We will have no further comment on this issue.”

When the team arrived Christmas day in Pasadena, Calif., for the Rose Bowl, Bullough did not make the trip, The News reported.

The Associated Press reported that Bullough is a two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer and was a third-team All-American this season. -- Allan Lengel
