Young Detroit entrepreneurs -- a hot-button topic nowadays -- are the focus of more attention from a national media company.
A top GM executive, North American division president Mark Reuss, spoke Tuesday about sponsoring an MTV "True Life" episode on local business visionaries, The Detroit News reports.
"Our friends at MTV have been on the ground talking to young people making a difference in Detroit, and we're going to do an upcoming episode of MTV's series 'True Life: Detroit Rising,' " Reuss said. "This is the kind of coverage that we want." . . .
"An influx of young people and many new companies are moving to Detroit because they know that this is a city where we make things and where we make things happen."
Reuss spoke at a Bloomfield Hills law firm's annual automotive industry breakfast in Detroit. News of MTV's plans surfaced last July when the network invited contacts from Detroiters aged 25 or younger who're starting a business. "Let us know what you're trying to accomplish and what obstacles you're facing," a casting call said.
"Detroit Rising" reportedly will air this summer and feature three Detroiters.
The documentary-style series, which began in 1998, aired a segment last Oct.6 titled "I'm a Boxer in Detroit." It featured Downtown Boxing Gym youth program trainees Shante Higgs, a Rose Hill Academy senior, and Kevin "Mooka" White, a 2012 Kettering High graduate. The full video is here:
