Editorial page editor Stephen Henderson assures his 2,158 Facebook friends that he's "not leaving the Freep, just adding another gig."

The high-profile sidelight involves "joining WXYZ's news team as a member of their Detroit 2020 team," he posted Friday evening, shortly after the TV station put a three-paragraph announcement on its website.

Henderson joins Channel 7 as the Detroit 2020 Insider, providing his unique perspective on hot-button issues in the 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. newscasts.

“Stephen Henderson is a tremendous addition” said WXYZ vice president and general manager Ed Fernandez. “His insight and perspective on the city will help take D2020 to the next level."

Henderson, a 43-year-old native Detroiter, has been opinion page editor since 2009 at the Freep, where he earlier was a reporter, editorial writer and editor for the Free Press. He also hosts "American Black Journal," a public affairs show that airs at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Detroit Public TV and appears there on miWeek at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. 

He graduated from University of Detroit Jesuit High School and the University of Michigan.
