Earlier this month we learned that Eva Reyes -- a legal assistant on a drug task force unit for the U.S. Attorneys office -- is under federal investigation in connection with her co-ownership of Nancy Whiskey, a popular Detroit dive bar at 2644 Harrison St. in North Corktown.
Reyes is under FBI scrutiny for alleged money laundering and false statements in connection with her ownership interest in the 115-year-old bar, the Freep reported in early September. Agents raided the corner bar and residence attached to it, records show, though that hasn't not triggered any charges.

Reyes owns the bar with her husband, Gerald Stevens. The couple is fighting back, with their attorney calling the probe a witch hunt.
Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press reports:
The accusation surfaced in a court hearing during which attorneys for the pub owners pressed the government to offer more information about why it wants the bank records of their clients — one of whom also works for the Department of Justice.
Defense attorney Gerald Evelyn argued that to the pub owners know very little about the government's investigation — besides having their home and corner bar raided, and receiving a subpoena for their bank records last month. He said the couple shouldn't have to turn over their bank records in a case that appears to have no legitimate purpose.
"We think this is not a legitimate law enforcement inquiry," Evelyn said. "It's more of a witch hunt."
