The new film "Detropia" chronicles the problems going on in the city and how the rest of the America can take a lesson from the problems Detroit is having, according to Kai Ryssdal, the host of Marketplace, the financial affairs show produced by American Public Media.
Ryssdal featured the film on his show this week. It is set to be released nationally Sept. 7.
It’s no secret that Detroit has its problems. Economic troubles and the fall of the auto industry loom over the city, Ryssdal writes.
The film describes the degradation of the city, the newcomers moving into the area, and the people that stayed after the economic downturn. It is the work of critically acclaimed documentary makers Heidi Ewing, a Farmington Hills native, and Rachel Grady.
"Things were really bellying out in the city and I kept wondering why and what happened here? I thought that maybe there was a film to be made here" Ewing told Ryssdal. "So we went in sort of blindly and moved to Detroit with our crew. We waited for the city to speak to us and see what story it would tell us and I think we found something compelling."
