By now, Detroit fans know what they’re getting at a Bob Seger concert, Brian McCollum writes in the Free Press.

Long a rite of passage for multiple generations of hometown fans, a Seger show here is now a kind of rock ritual, comfortable in its familiarity.

Still, there were some new emotional highs and musical thrills Thursday night as Seger stepped up for the first of two Palace shows, playing for a cheery crowd of more than 15,000 and reaffirming a hometown fan bond that’s nearing the half-century mark.

 

Reports of a newly fit Seger weren’t exaggerated: Trim enough to knock a few years off his approaching 68th birthday, he appeared upbeat and confident during the 110-minute set, even as the high notes of “Katmandu” and “Night Moves” escaped him toward night’s end.

“It’s good to be home,” he said early in the evening, six weeks into a tour that started in Toledo and wound westward before heading back this way.
