Kim's Garden, a Chinese restaurant in Novi, has closed one year year after five immigrant employees from Mexico  died in a house fire, the Detroit News reports. The house belonged to the owners, who did not live there.

The restaurant didn’t recover after the tragedy, said Ray Cassar, one of the owner's attorneys, according to a report in the Detroit News. On Saturday the restaurant on Novi Road closed after serving free meals to anyone who came.

Owners Tam and Ada Mei Lei of Novi were charged in federal court with harboring five Mexican nationals who died in a house fire. Sentencing is set for June 13.

The two pleaded guilty in the case but are not responsible for their deaths, their attorneys told the News. The guilty plea included conspiring to harbor people in the country illegally.

The fire has been linked to careless smoking, and authorities believe a smoke detector had been disabled.
