Did Detroit police destroy video of questionable police activity?

A federal lawsuit says yes.

Paul Kampe of the Oakland Press reports that an Oakland University journalism student from Rochester Hills and a friend are suing the City of Detroit and the police department, alleging that police officers violated their rights and destroyed their property after they stopped to record video of officers in the process of detaining a man on a sidewalk last summer.

The Oakland Press reports that the federal suit, that was filed June 18, states that the incident occurred on June 23, 2014 as student Mekkel Richards, 23, and his longtime friend Adam Adam Malinowski, 22, .a Rochester Hills native, were walking back from the Detroit fireworks show.

The two stopped to record the incident in the area of Woodward Avenue and Grand Circus Park, the paper reports.

The lawsuit alleges that the police used excessive force in wrongfully detaining them and destroying their property, the paper reports.
