Call it predatory, call it what you like. A man ran off with the two guns used in a shootout between a cop and a suspected robber.

It all happened after a 27-year-old off-duty Detroit police officer was shot and wounded Sunday night in a confrontation with a man who was trying to rob him in a party store parking lot on Gratiot near Chene on the city's east side, police tell WXYZ 's Shelley Childers. The suspect was fatally shot.

The incident happed around 11 p.m. outside Motor City Liquor after the officer left the store. The two exchanged gunfire. The rookie officer, hit twice, is listed in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

About five minutes after the shootout, another man came up to the scene and took the suspect's gun and officer's gun, Chief James Craig says.

The officer joined the department in 2016.
