The former site of Joe Muer restaurant in Detroit -- bounded by Gratiot Avenue, St. Aubin Avenue, East Vernor Highway and the Dequindre Cut -- is expected to get a life.

A proposed development of housing and retail shops is slated for the 4.3 acres just outside downtown, reports Francis X. Donnelly of The Detroit News.

Charlie Edwards, who bought the site in 2015, is joining with longtime developers Peter Cummings and Kietrich Knoer on the project.

"This property is a gateway to downtown," says Cummings, executive chairman of The Platform, which builds mixed-use properties.

The restaurant opened at 2000 Gratiot on Oct. 28, 1929. It closed in May 1998.

There's now a Joe Muer's Seafood restaurant in the Renaissance Center.
