OnStar to the rescue?
Well, not quite. But the service will help.
Eric Lawrence of the Detroit Free Press reports:
OnStar, the subscription-based navigation and communication service available on General Motors vehicles, will help the department by cutting the time it takes for the service to be used in tracking stolen vehicles. Instead of requiring carjacking victims to file a police report and obtain a report number, OnStar will allow police officers to verify a carjacking involving a vehicle with an active OnStar account when they arrive at the scene.
Police Chief James Craig called it a streamlined approach to a persistent problem where response time is key. Too often, stolen vehicles are stripped before police are able to track them down, he said.
“This is a great step, and a big step,” Craig said today during a news conference at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
