Update -- Monday, 6:55 p.m.:- NBC Nightly News, near the end of its broadcast Monday, got into the act and took a shot at the Free Press, flashing a photo of the front page and noting the screw-up.

------------------------------

From earlier today

Everyone with a pulse in and around metro Detroit knows that Jim Harbaugh soon becomes head football coach at Michigan.

Everyone except for the Detroit Free Press, that is.

The man in the photo above is JOHN Harbaugh, Jim’s younger brother.

John is shown wearing a headset and a Baltimore Ravens cap, the team he currently coaches. Anyone that has watched five minutes of football this season could tell you that Jim coaches the 49ers, not the Ravens, and that the photo would need to be corrected before going to print.

But the Free Press missed it. And ran it. Splashed atop the front page.

A minor grammatical error in a small news item on page 11 is understandable. A botched photo on the front page accompanying what has been the biggest sports story in town over the last number of weeks?

Inexcusable.
