But at a half a mile from Heaven you dropped me back Down to this cold, cold world -- Stevie Wonder's Rocket Love.

Well, with only three outs to go and the Tigers looking pretty,  reliever Jose Rafael Valverde entered the ninth inning, hoping to finish things off. The score was 3-1.

But the Valverde magic of last year was no where to be seen. He  blew the 3-1 lead, and then blew the game. The Tigers lost to the Oakland A's 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

One more game to go. The series is tied 2-2.

Justin Verlander will pitch on Thursday. The last hope.

After the game, at a televised press conference, manager Jim Leyland said: "I thought we played our hearts out."

Verlander said of today's game: "I'm going to try and treat it like another start. Obviously it's a big game for us. We allowed ourselves to be in this position."  -- A.L.
