Macomb County has a jail problem.
An overcrowding emergency is declared, Jameson Cook writes in The Macomb Daily. Officials have a week -- until June 17 -- to get the facility under capacity or release inmates early.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham made the declaration June 2, as legally required after the jail exceeded its 1,238 capacity for seven straight days.
By law Wickersham has 15 days to reduce the population to 25 under the capacity – 1,213 -- with the help of local judges and police. Chief Judge James Biernat Jr. will have the final decision on early releases, if needed.
