Is there anything sadder than an abandoned temple of sports? (And also concerts, true.)
If you feel that way, good news: The Palace of Auburn Hills appears to have found a new owner, according to Crain's Detroit Business. Schostak Bros. & Co. is under contract to buy the place. The plans are to tear down the buildings and redevelop the site for "office and tech buildings."
Sounds less exciting than hosting arena-size shows and basketball games that turn ugly, but better than a structure standing empty for years and years, as happened with the Pontiac Silverdome. Crain's Kirk Pinho:
It's not known how much the prominent Livonia-based real estate development company is paying for the more than 100 acres that houses the 22,076-seat former home of the Detroit Pistons.
...It's also not known when demolition would begin or who would be responsible for paying for it. A timeframe for completion of the deal is also unknown.
Wednesday is the two-year anniversary of the last Pistons game at The Palace, whose property in 2017 was rezoned as a technology and research district in advance of the team's move to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit that was announced in November 2016.
