A Palestinian immigrant, who has been a community activist, was found guilty in federal court in Detroit on Monday of failing to disclose that she had been convicted of a 1969 Israel bombing when she applied for U.S. citizenship, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Rasmieh Odeh, 67, a former Michigan resident, moved to Chicago where she works for the works for the Arab American Action Network, reports Niraj Warikoo of the Freep. She was convicted of immigration fraud.
Sentencing is set for March 10, and she could face up to 10 years. U.S. District Judge Gershwin Drain revoked her bond Monday and she was detained.
Odeh maintained she wasn't involved in the 1969 terror attack, but her opponents say a 2004 documentary reveals her role in the incident, the Freep reported.
Ryan Felton of the Metro Times wrote of the case:
There's one issue, however, Odeh's supporters say: Following her arrest, Odeh was brutally tortured and raped while in prison for weeks, which led to her offering a confession for that she participated in two bombings — crimes she now says she didn't commit. Odeh then spent 10 years in Israeli prisons. Even so, federal prosecutors say in a 16-page indictment, Odeh was a part of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a Marxist-Lenin group who "used terrorism as a means to win attention to its cause.
