There are some patients who still see oncologist Dr. Farid Fata as a hero, as a miracle worker. And then there's the folks who see him as a fraud, as a monster.
On Wednesday night, hundreds of patients and their family members, who see him as a monster, packed a Rochester Hills hotel ballroom looking for some support and guidance, according to a report by WDIV.
You might recall Dr. Fata, who has oncology offices around Metro Detroit, was recently arrested and charged with misdiagnosing patients, giving unnecessary medical treatment, including chemotherapy, and defrauding Medicare out of millions of dollars. He's being held in jail after a federal judge set a $9 million bond.
WDIV reporter Mara MacDonald writes on the station''s website about the gathering:
All of them wondering what has been done to them after Dr. Farid Fata was arrested by the feds for Medicare fraud and poisoning patients with chemotherapy for profit. Right now it’s a scramble for Fata’s patients to get their medical records from the FBI. It’s time to find new doctors and explore what legal options they may have.
WDIV reports that attorneys told the crowd that they don't have a class action suit and that every case will have to be examined by medical malpractice attorneys and their consultants.
An oncology nurse told the crowd that she reported Dr. Fata for medical malpractice, but nothing came of that.
"Within 15 minutes of being in his office I knew that there was no way that I was going to accept a position at his office," she said.
Patricia Boggess complained that her husband had four years of so-called maintenance chemotherapy even though he was in remission. She said he is weak.
After the word broke about Dr. Fata, her husband went to another doctor who ended the chemo.
Christopher Andreoff, the doctor's attorney, has repeatedly said there is no evidence showing his client has done anything wrong.
