Andreas Apostolopoulos, owner of the Penobscot Building, the State Bank and the Silverdome as well as the would-be jail-to-MLS venue developer, is in the process of demolishing a three-story building on Michigan Ave.
Curbed Detroit: There's no official word on exactly what's happening here, but Curbed is now ready to project that 201 Michigan Avenue will become a parking lot. Possibly a garage, if we're lucky. Keep in mind, we're talking about the same man who wanted to demolish the State Bank Building for parking, arguing there was no other way his Penobscot tenants could park. How far away from the Penobscot is this property? Three blocks.
Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but sometime soon in our not-too-distant future, downtown Detroit will finally free itself from the shackles of residential and commercial buildings. And on that great and glorious day, no one will ever again complain about the lack of parking in Detroit's central business district.
