The Tigers know what it means to eat a big salary.
At the end of spring training this year, the team cut pitchers Mike Pelfrey and Mark Lowe and ate the $13.5 million in contractual obligations.
Now, the Tigers have to figure out if it's worth doing the same with Anibal Sanchez, 33, once a star starting pitcher who is has been nothing short of disastrous this year as a reliever, giving up one homer after another.
But his release is even more costly: $16.8 million he’s guaranteed this season, plus a $5-million buyout for 2018, reports Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.
That comes to a total of $21.8 million.
If the Tigers are contemplating such a move, they aren't saying publicly.
“The course has remained the same,” manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday. “Nothing has really changed. We have discussions about our players all the time.”
