The temperature in metro Detroit is expected to reach a high of 5 degrees Fahrenheit today, which is 27 degrees colder than the point at which water freezes. It is so cold in fact that you'd be surprised at the places where it's currently warmer than Detroit.
Hudson Bay, which is a good 1000 miles to our north, is expected to have a high of 6 today. A difference of one degree isn't much, but considering it's in the middle of northern Canada, you'd think our January would be at least somewhat more temperate. Not today.
The difference in temperature is even more stark in Anchorage, Alaska where it is 37 degrees, with some light rain. Do you remember rain? It's that precipitation that isn't frozen. Rain is nice. We miss rain.
Also, it is 36, with partly sunny skies, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Of course, everyone knows that Iceland is actually green while Greenland is icy, so we checked the forecast for Nuuk, Greenland. Nuuk will have a high of 28 today, technically below freezing but balmy compared to our current weather.
In Helsinki, Finland, it is 19. Olso, Norway will get some snow, but with a high of 28. Even Riga, Latvia had a high of ten degrees today.
Even worse, the temperature in Sochi, Russia is currently 52 degrees, after a high earlier in the day of 64. It was literally 59 degrees warmer in the Winter Olympics host city than it is currently in Detroit.
