Detroit has three openings this week -- a downtown restaurant (Lumen Detroit), a baseball season and a baseball exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The "Play Ball" display, which started Thursday, has two paintings owned by the DIA and rare cards, memorabilia and collectibles from E. Powell Miller of Rochester, Mich. His treasures include more than 500 color cards issued from 1909–1911 by the American Tobacco Co. Honus Wagner is among players in the set.

Al Kaline memorabilia is featured to mark the 50th anniversary of the Detroit Tigers' 1968 championship.

The sports tie-in is part of a DIA effort to promote itself as an unstuffy family destination. "The DIA is more than a museum," Director Salvador Salort-Pons says in a news release, which doesn't say how long "Play Ball" will be on view.

Admission is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb residents. Hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on both weekend days.
