Closing time.

There will be no school, no mail, no zoo, and — in some cities — no trash pickup or parking enforcement as metro Detroit endures what's described as a "once-in-a-generation" cold snap.

Temperatures will range from about -4 on the high end to -14 on the low, with Arctic winds making it feel as low as -40. In this weather, we're told frost bite can set in within 15 minutes.

Officials' advice: Don't go outside if you don't have to. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency.

Many public and private institutions are answering the call by shutting down so you have no where to go (and perhaps also so their employees don't lose a finger and find them liable).

The Free Press has compiled a handy list of what's canceled or closed Wednesday. We've included a few items below:

36th District Court

Detroit Zoo

Fox Theatre

The Mall at Partridge Creek

United States Postal Service

Public schools and public colleges and universities in the area will be closed as well. Downtown Detroit's Which Which sandwich shop is closed along with other restaurants in the area.

Conversely, safe havens for those in need of warmth are very much open.

The Detroit News reports:

Warming centers around southeast Michigan opened their doors. Detroit's 12 recreation centers are open to the public during regular operating hours, but the city's library system will be closed Wednesday and Thursday because of the weather. Four warming centers in the city will be open overnight. Around 50 warming centers in Wayne County's suburbs also are open.
