Troopers from the Michigan State Police and the Alpena Police Department conducted a traffic stop involving a reported stolen vehicle, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that during the stop, the motorist pulled out a knife and cut the Alpena officer, who then shot him. The wounded man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect has been identified as a 35-year-old Alpena man, Michigan State Police said. The injured officer sustained a laceration to the hand and was treated at the hospital.

Two officers from the Alpena Police Department are on paid administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
