Detroit Police say their investigation indicates the boy jumped or fell from a window in the family's high-rise apartment in the 2500 block of West Grand Boulevard about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The youngster had made past threats of committing suicide, but police did not say when that occurred or release any further details Thursday, the Free Pres reports.

Police officers arrived at the scene within 4 1/2 to 5 minutes of the call and rushed the boy to Henry Ford Hospital, which is about a half mile away from the complex, said Chief Jerald James, who heads the EMS Division of the Detroit Fire Department.

It took EMS 12 minutes to arrive, which is within the division's average run time of 12-13 minutes, James said.

He disputed earlier reports that an ambulance didn't arrive. "EMS did show up to the call," he told the Free Press.
