It doesn't take all that much to survey the distressed-looking city of Highland Park, and review its history of financial despair to figure out it really does need cash.
And that's what makes this story about indicted Highland Park School Board member Robert Davis all the more egregious.
The Detroit News reports that $84,000 from Davis' bogus non-profit was used for a spending spree that included a car, clothes, entertainment, bars and restaurants. The News cited an unsealed FBI search warrant affidavit that was written to search Davis' home.
And as they say on the game shows on TV, "That's Not All." The affidavit noted that another $86,711 was taken from the bank account of Citizens United to Save Highland Park Schools bank account, the News reported. The car in question was a $21,450 used silver Mercedes-Benz CLK320 coupe he bought in May 2009.
Davis faces 16 counts of stealing $125,000 from the schools from 2004 to 2010. The affidavit could provide clues as to where the missing money went.
Carl Marlinga, the former Macomb County prosecutor, who is representing Davis, told the News he had not seen the document and therefore declined to comment. -- A.L.
