The rules are serious at the federal courthouse in Detroit when it comes to guns. No weapons are allowed.
U.S. Rep. John Conyers’ office manager broke that rule recently when security officers found a gun in her purse, Tresa Baldas of the Free Press reports, though the Conyers' employee was not charged or she didn't lose her job. She received a ticket.
Yet when security officers found a gun in the briefcase of a male law clerk for U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn last year, he agreed to resign. A veteran female clerk was fired last year after a gun was discovered in her purse.
“Each circumstance was different,” Court Administrator David Weaver told Baldas. He would not comment on any specifics of each gun case, beyond noting that the punishments varied.
“It’s not one size fits all. You have to look at the situation and the person. Different decisions were made based on the information available.”
