Is Garden City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michelle Cline that out of touch?
Some teachers who attended a board meeting Monday night think so, and were offended by her remarks on race, Randy Wimbley of Fox 2 reports.
Talking about the the cash-strapped district and the possibility of being dissolved or falling into the hands of an emergency manager, Cline said:
"It would be unfortunate if we are the first white school district -- and they're going to take one -- I hope it's not going to be us," Cline said during the meeting. "We do not want to be the first predominantly white community that loses its school
district and we have to work together."
The state had just rejected Garden City's plan to cut costs and said it needs to cut more.
Some teachers were so offended they got up and left, Wilbley reports. One asked if the superintendent wanted to rephrase her comments, but she refused.
Teacher Julie Naughton said it was ironic that the statements came on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
"It was so ironic we had the image of Martin Luther King on the screen in front of us," Naughton tells Fox 2. . "And for that statement to come out was just unbelievable."
