Restaurant openings downtown Detroit are becoming more commonplace.
But this one is opening in a not so common place.
Sylvia Rector of the Detroit Free Press writes that the Republic restaurant will open sometime next week in one of the cooler buildings in the city: The historic G.A.R. Building (Grand Army of the Republic)— the tall, castle-like triangular building set in the intersection of Cass, Grand River and Adams.
Executive chef Kate Williams tells the Free Press she plans to hold invitation-only practice dinners this weekend and then decide which day next week she'll open to the public.
The G.A.R. building was built in the late 1890s.
