Public transportation in Metro Detroit is inferior to many other urban areas around the country including Seattle, Washington, D.C., and New York.

So, any inkling of improvement should be welcome.

A transit task force is ready to recommend a citywide bus system to Royal Oak city commissioners on Monday, Mike McConnell of the Daily Tribune reports.

“We’ve been working with SMART on the numbers to make sure it makes sound financial sense and how much the millage rate will be,” Marie Donigan, head of the task force, tells the Tribune, which reports:

Operation of city buses would include participation from SMART, which would provide more than a dozen buses that would serve Royal Oak and connect with existing SMART bus service. The city buses would be smaller than the coaches the regional transit company uses for its service in southeast Michigan.

SMART would also expand its existing bus service on Main Street in the city to run between the city’s norther border and the south end of the city near I-696 and Woodward within a short walking distance of the Detroit Zoo.

“SMART bus service on Main Street would run every 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the time of day,” Donigan said.
