Michigan’s top doctor said Saturday: “Covid isn't done with us."
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, appearing on 910AM radio show “Detroit in Black and White,” noted that Covid numbers are declining and most of Southeast Michigan is considered low risk.
But health care officials are ready to go back into a state of readiness if another variant arises, she added.
"Sadly, the pandemic is not over," she said, although we have more medications and vaccines to deal with the virus then at the outset in March 2020.
She said the state is still recommending masks in long-term care and health facilities, jails, correctional facilities and shelters. It’s also a good idea for people immunocompromised or unvaccinated to wear masks in other circumstances, suggested the doctor, who wears a mask in public settings and said she's still uncomfortable at unmasked gatherings.
On Friday, Michigan reported a daily average of 910 new Covid cases for a two-day period and 45 deaths. Since the start two years ago this month, the state has recorded 2,065,912 cases and 32,419 deaths.
Dr. Bagdasarian again urged people to get vaccinated to protect against severe illness or death.
