Detroit emergency crews Wednesday recovered the body of a 55-year-old man discovered dead inside a manhole on the city's east side.
Candice Williams reports the man and his girlfriend were believed to be searching for scrap materials underground. The man entered the manhole at E. Grand Boulevard and Chene — across from the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant — while his girlfriend waited above, police said. When he didn't resurface, the girlfriend notified authorities.
The man was found lying face down in water, said Detroit Fire 5th Battalion Chief Jim Provost.
It is the second incident in three days where someone was found in a sewer. Sunday night, firefighters freed a man holding himself up by his elbows in a storm water inlet at the curb near 32nd Street and Michigan Avenue.
