"Searching for Sugar Man," the saga of Detroit folk singer named Rodriguez, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary.
"Searching for Sugar Man" tells the true story of Rodriguez, who was discovered in The Sewer, a Detroit bar, in the late 1960s by two producers.
Rodriguez recorded an album, which bombed, and Rodriguez began a life as a construction worker and became a father, living in southwest Detroit.
But a bootleg recording became a hit in apartheid-era South Africa. Over the next two decades, Rodrigues became a star in absentia, and rumors circulated that he had committed suicide on stage, while performing. The film follows the story of how two South African fans find out what really happened to their hero.
Two other critically acclaimed documentaries about Detroit, "Detropia" and "BURN," failed to win nominations.
