Veteran astronaut Kelly is nearly four months into his one-year-long mission aboard the space station.
During his mission, which is double the length of most expeditions, will test how the body reacts and adapts to long-duration spaceflight, according to NASA.
In addition to the variety of experiments that Kelly is conducting while orbiting the Earth at 17,500 miles per hour, he is chronicling the flight through photos posted on his Twitter feed and using the hashtag #YearInSpace.
In its first day online, Kelly's tweet earns more than 2,200 "favorite" clicks and is shared more than 1,300 times.
Dozens of local replies to the spaceman express gratitude, pride and friendly quips. Predictably, a handful of tweeters can't resist tedious tropes about Detroit looking better from space than up close, and about Kelly being at a safe distance to avoid gunshots.
