Energy, money and newcomers are transforming Pontiac's core. Detroit News business writer Michael Martinez finds "new life inside 'the Loop'" framed by northbound and southbound Woodward.

The city's downtown . . . is reinventing itself with a wave of young residents and technology-based businesses.

Since late 2010, Pontiac has received tens of millions of dollars in state and federal grants that have given it a much-needed face-lift. At least 47 vacant or blighted buildings have been demolished.

New businesses include an energy drink company, information technology firm, mobile app design company and a 3D printing facility, Martinez reports. He quotes the upbeat mayor, Leon Jukowski:

"The old image of the gritty industrial town where nothing happens is changing. You're starting to see young people walking and living downtown, and that's a huge step. It's on its way back."
