Shield’s Pizzeria and Restaurant, known for its Detroit-style square pizza, plans to open in January in the the Maccabees Building at 5057 Woodward Ave., opposite the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The chain, which has outlets in Macomb, Southfield and Troy, will move into the space last occupied by Maccabees Traders, an Asian-inspired restaurant closed in mid-June  reports Susan Selasky of the Detroit Free Press.

"It’s such a great entrance with the mosaic ceiling tiles, and it is such a classic Albert Kahn design from years ago," co-owner Paul Andoni tells the Freep.

Shield's originated in Detroit in 1937 at the corner of Davison and Shields, and was considered a serious competitor to the original Buddy's Pizza on Conant in Detroit. Shield's closed that location in the late '80s and expanded in the suburbs.
