The barbecue wonderchild of Corktown, Slows, is getting an upgrade that means a shutdown of at least eight days.
Remodeling will expand the Michigan Avenue restaurant into space that has been used for private events, Detroit Free Press food writer Sylvia Rector reports. The shutdown is scheduled Jan. 1-9.
The project will allow Slows -- known for its quality craft-beer selection -- to add a second bar with 36 taps.
The kitchen will also be enlarged and new equipment added
"This is a long time coming," chef Brian Perrone tells Rector. "We had always intended to offer special items, but have been limited by the constraints of the kitchen."
The popular lunch and dinner destination opened in September 2005 at 2138 Michigan, just west of downtown.
As of Saturday afternoon, more than 350 fans clicked "like" on a Facebook page post about the upgrade. "Can't wait! Maybe we will actually get a table now," comments Nissan executive Adam Stream. Another post, from Jason Borkowski of Canton, says: "Great news, but damn -- my birthday plans were just crushed."
