Public transportation in Metro Detroit is clearly inferior to many cities around the nation.
And it could only get worse if Metro Detroiters don't approve a tax hike.
Christina Hall of the Detroit Free Press reports that SMART, the suburban bus system, is pushing for a millage hike vote in August. SMART is seeking a property tax increase from the current 0.59 to 1 mill in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
If the system doesn't get the infusion of cash it won't be able to keep its aging bus fleet operating beyond next year, the Freep reports. -- A.L.
