The Detroit Zoo is too noisy.
At least that's what some area residents think.
Bill Laitner of the Detroit Free Press writes that the zoo plans to hold a town meeting Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. that is expected to draw neighbors from Huntington Woods and Royal Oak, who signed petitions to curb noise.
Laitner writes:
It isn't roaring lions or yelping penguins. Instead, as attendance topped 1.3 million last year — nearly matching the zoo's all-time record of 1,364,905 set in 1997 — it's the amplified music of special events, the early morning PA announcements to happy hordes in fun runs, and the simulated prehistoric growls in the summerlong Dinosauria exhibits (this year, to be May 22-Sept. 7) that have neighbors pawing the ground.
Some also worry that a new passenger train planned by the zoo, to run along its north border that abuts neighborhoods, would add to the din.
"I didn't move here to live next to Disney World," said Ken Zino, 63, an auto writer whose house in Huntington Woods is a stone's throw from where the new train would start.
