Anyone who has been to Belle Isle as of late knows the state faces a daunting task of upgrading the park  when it officially takes control of it in mid-February under its 30-year lease with the city.

But Tom Henderson of Crain's Detroit Business reports that the state isn't sitting on its thumbs in the meantime.

He reports that he state "has been busy already, taking down dead trees and stacking brush; marking big patches of blacktop that need to be replaced on the bike paths that run through the woods in the middle of the island; and making those once impenetrable paths open to runners and, since the recent blizzard, cross-country skiers by chain-sawing long-fallen trees and thick brush."

He notes that they're are picnic tables with benches missing, fallen trees blocking the canals.

He writes: 

What was a surprise was how much the state has done, already, and how much better things are starting to look.  -- A.L.
