We learned as kids that if we didn't finish our schoolwork, sometimes we missed recess. State senators now also realize that inaction has consequences.

A rare summer-long schedule of sessions will address road funding after Proposal 1 went down in flames, Gary Heinlein and Chad Livengood of The Detroit News write.

"We have to adapt to the circumstances that we were dealt,"  Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall, R-White Lake tells the Lansing writers. "The leadership felt we've got to get this thing done, so if it means inconveniencing a few people, so be it."

Meanwhile, the state House has not announced such plans, but but House Speaker Kevin Cotter, R-Mount Pleasant, was scheduled to unveil his new road-funding proposal Wednesday afternoon, the News reports.

The plan will depend heavily on reshuffling money from restricted funds within the annual state budget from departments such as community health and social services.

"We're not waiting for the summer; we're getting to work on this right now," Cotter spokesman Gideon D'Assandro told the News. "We've already started drafting and introducing bills."
