Deaths for bicyclists on Michigan roads increased in 2015 compared to the previous year. Ditto for accidents.
"In 2015 we saw significant increases in just about all the crash categories we report on and the largest was among bicyclist fatalities," Melody Kindraka, spokeswoman for the Office of Highway Safety Planning, told Katrease Stafford of the Detroit Free Press. "It was up 57% from 21 in 2014 to 33 in 2015."
Data shows in 2015 there were 1,897 reported accidents involving bicyclists and motor vehicles in Michigan, up from 1,763 in 2014, the Freep reports.
John Lindenmayer, executive director of the League of Michigan Bicyclists, said he's worried the fatalities and injuries won't decrease and will remain on par this year with 2015 totals due to the fatal June 7 deadly crash in Kalamazoo that killed five and injured four.
