The Sterling Heights Police Department, Stevenson High School, the 41A District Court and the library were evacuated Wednesday afternoon after someone brought an old military mortar shell to the police department parking lot.

Mayor Michael Taylor issued this statement:

This afternoon, a gentleman came into the SHPD to report he had a mortar shell (that had been in his possession for 65 years) in the back of his vehicle and was unsure how to dispose of it. SHPD immediately called the Michigan State Police and began the evacuation process at the Police Station, Library and 41A District Court. All buildings and parking lots are currently closed to the public while SHPD waits for MSP to arrive and properly handle and dispose of the mortar.

Thank you to all for your patience and understanding as this situation is handled. We anticipate the aforementioned city buildings will re-open later this afternoon.
