Update: Thursday, 4:45 p.m. --  Police have taken a man into custody in connection with the stabbing, WDIV reports.

Riding the bus in Detroit has its share of drawbacks.

For one, It's painful to stand at a bus stop in the city in this Arctic weather waiting for a bus. Then there's the potential for violence.

Chauncy Glover of WDIV reports that a 14-year-old Detroit boy, DeJon McGhee,  was stabbed Wednesday at Dexter Avenue and Lawrence Street during an incident involving a man who appeared either  to be under the influence or suffering from mental illness. The teen is in critical condition.

WDIV reported that It all started when two men on the bus -- one black and one white -- started arguing over Martin Luther King Jr. The black man insisted he killed King, and the argument appeared to be racial, WDIV reported.

WDIV reports that a group of students from Detroit's Martin Luther High School, including McGhee,  told the black man he was wrong. McGhee started arguing.  The students got off the bus.  So did the man. The man kept asking McGhee if he wanted to fight.

Dejon eventually slugged the man in the nose in self defense, police told WDIV.  The man pulled out a knife. McGhee ran back on the bus. The man followed and stabbed McGhee in the chest.

The man apparently fled.  Police described the man as being in his 40s or 50s. He was wearing an orange sweater, a green winter coat and red hat with a "D" on the front, WDIV reported. -- Allan Lengel
