Local, national and international media outlets have been writing that ex-state Rep. Rashida Tlaib will soon become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. She's the Democratic candidate in the race to fill ex-Congressman John Conyers' seat, so it has long been a foregone conclusion she'll win in the heavily Democratic 13th District on Nov. 6

But hold on.

In a surprise move, Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones on Friday filed last-minute paperwork to run as a write-in candidate as an Inddependent for Conyers' seat, reports Kat Stafford and Todd Spangler of the Detroit Free Press.

You might recall in the August primary, Jones won the race to serve out the rest of Conyers' term, but lost to Tlaib for the two-year term.

T.J. Bucholz, Tlaib's campaign spokesman, took a jab at Jones on Twitter Monday: “Successful Congressional write-in campaigns generally require three things: money, time, and work ethic. If you can’t check at least two of those three boxes, don’t attempt it. #mi13”

Write-in campaigns are tough, but Mayor Mike Duggan won in his first primary that way -- though he had far more time to launch that drive, and likely had far better organization and more money than Jones.
