In the early 2000s, members of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners agreed to be shot with Tasers before rejecting the proposal to arm officers with them

Now, with all the talk around the country about use of police force, there are discussions about Tasters again, reports George Hunter of The Detroit News.

Chief James Craig is a proponent. “We’re still in the test phase for body cams, so we wanted to get through that before making a decision on Tasers. But I’m fully supportive of their use," he tells The News.

The upside, says advocates, is that Tasers present an alternative to deadly force, Hunter reports. The downside: Critics say police have killed citizens with Tasers.

“We’re at the point now where there’s discussion of implementing Tasers, but we want to get the public’s input first,” Ricardo Moore, a former Detroit cop and a member of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners tells the News. “It’s a necessary step; we need to see how the people feel.”
