Mayor Eddie Francis gave global techno star Richie Hawtin the key to the city of Windsor before a crowd of techno fans Wednesday, the Windsor Star reports.
Hawtin (pictured here) grew up in Windsor, and he crossed the border frequently as a youth to visit Detroit clubs and hear the "incredible electronic sound," he says in a video with the linked article. Hawtin now lives in Berlin and Ibiza but maintains a studio in Windsor.
“He’s the best at what he does worldwide," Francis said.
"Being the best at what he does, he has been able to position the City of Windsor well. He has been a successful ambassador to the city. And he continues to inspire a younger generation.”
Hawtin said: “Getting an award like that from the city is important to me. But maybe it’s even more important for the next generation to see that this is a true art form.”
