An episode of MTV's "True Life" series this weekend sounds more uplifting than many segments.

Three students talk about how they "decided to battle Detroit's blight, one block at a time," as MTV's introduction says. The installment, titled "I'm Saving Detroit," airs at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Serena Maria Daniels has a preview at The Detroit News.

The show depicts a positive spirit by youth who, despite having to deal with the lack of resources and overcoming poverty at home, are making changes for the city.

Daniels speaks with Alyssia Akers, 18, who mobilized other teens to press for demolition of abandoned buildings near her former school, Central Collegiate Academy on the northwest side.

Another teen pushed the city to pick up piles of tires discarded on a vacant lot near her house. A third [Jae'Lyne Taylor] helped lead classmates at Cody High School in a cleanup effort despite the threat she and her family faced of being evicted. . . .

Akers hopes viewers will see that young Detroiters aren’t letting the city’s troubled outlook get in the way of making positive changes.
