The city of Detroit hit the pause button on the move to shut down the Russell Industrial Center, which houses artists and small businesses.
On Friday, the board of appeals for the city Building, Safety and Engineering and Environmental Department, approved a consent agreement allowing tenants to stay so long as the building owners make a series of fixes with rolling deadlines that begins as soon as three weeks, reports Louis Aguilar at The Detroit News.
The building had been ordered shut because of safety and code violations. On Feb. 21, tenants were told to vacate their space within days.
“There’s been so much uncertainty, and none of it’s been our fault,” says Terry Myles, who has had a wood shop at the Russell for 28 years. “This is good but, it’s not a final decision. We’re just tired.”
